Flushed Away was an ok movie. A bit spazzy and hectic, but well crafted. Still, one can't help but wonder what it woulda looked like if it had been hand drawn. A friend of mine LOVES this movie. He saw it 56 times in the theater. No joke! We estimate he spent over 600 bucks going to see it. And he loves the character of Rita, who was always shaking her butt at the camera. So for him, i drew this loving tribute to Rita's ass. ( Sorry for the cheap, photoshop-filter background... )

I know I know. This is in poor taste. I was digging through a pile of old art and found this tribute to cynicism. "Screw it" i thought, as I posted it to this blog. "Don isn't really making movies anymore." And besides, MGM took one giant crap on the NIMH franchise by making that so-called "sequel" *shudders in disgust* So I doubt this drawing is gonna ruin anyone's childhood memories.

Really though. I loved the secret of Nimh when I was a kid. Still do. Please don't hate me for drawing this lol.

Somehow, I always get hired onto a movie or a show where I have to draw wolves. Not that I mind drawing them, it's just kind of odd. These are paintings from YELLOWSTONE WOLVES, an animated movie that was shelved after we worked on it for 9 months. I was hired as a painter, but I'd never actually painted before. I had 2 weeks to learn how to do it. Not bad for a newbie wouldn't you say?

Every now and then, I try and imitate the style of a certain film or artist. Practice makes perfect, and all that. In this case, I tried mimicing the background style of THE SECRET OF NIMH. ( call it my fantasy of making a DECENT sequel to the secret of nimh ) The second-to top image is from the film, the top and bottom images are my own painting. The movie scan is a bit dark, which makes my painting "pop" a bit.

As if we didn't have to worry about bears mauling us as we leave the house, we also have mule deer up the wazoo. They like to hang out in our backyard, and aren't scared of people, so it's actually quite easy to draw them.

I love their shapes. I had this kangaroo girl character ( a character cut from my werewolf film ) and I wanted to try modeling her in 3d. Altogether not a bad attempt, the finished cg model is slightly different than the 2d reference drawing, but for my first complex character...it ain't bad.

This little critter and the stills that accompany her was a character from a pilot I and a few friends worked on for Nickelodeon, in our final days at CalArts. The show, "AGENTS OF W.A.K" was about three characters who worked for the Belgian government and ran around the world spending billions of dollars trying to answer the dumbest questions. Unfortunatly, we worked with a brainless producer who wanted to split our pilot up into three VERY SHORT episodes. Thus, it didn't turn out very funny. You know, it's the kind of cartoon that garners only a few "heh-he" kinds of sympathy laughs. What's even more remarkable, is that we were able to finish these cartoons while trying to graduate. ( which we did ) Despite all this, I'm still proud of the effort we put into it. It got us jobs and taught us a valuable lessons.

A nice fella saw my werewolf art and asked if I could draw his werewolf character. A werewolf I might add, that throws rubber ducks at people. Needless to say, I found that very amusing. And I never turn down good money for drawing monsters :}

For those of you who don't know, I am a classically trained 2D animator. Which basically means I'm obsolete. With a lack of traditional jobs out there, I chose to learn computer animation. Unfortunatly, I had to TEACH MYSELF the particulars of MAYAs animation controls! So with that in mind, have a gander at two of my recent animation tests.

I'm gonna try my best to upload one new blog-worthy drawing a day. Since I just started this blog, and I don't have a new drawing to start with, here's an older mock-up I did for a potential FRAGGLE ROCK THE MOVIE movie poster. All the text on this drawing was hand drawn ( minus the line at the top )
